From the Sidelines to the Spotlight: Rethinking “Sports Dreams” for Our Students

Sometimes learning looks like a classroom.  Sometimes it looks like a sideline.

And today it looked like my daughter making her debut as an ESPN sideline reporter for the JMU Sport Network.

Yes, this is a proud mom moment. I won’t even pretend otherwise.   But it’s also something bigger. Because what I saw today wasn’t just a “sports dream”, it was a reimagined one.

The Disney/ESPN Connection (Because You Know I Had to Go There)

If you didn’t know, ESPN is owned by The Walt Disney Company, which means storytelling, magic, and opportunity are woven into everything from theme parks to sports broadcasting.

And one of my favorite examples of this comes from One Day at Disney (Season 1, Episode 3), featuring Sage Steele. In that episode, you see something powerful:  not a former athlete, not someone whose dream was limited to playing the game, but someone who found her place telling the story of the game.

Let’s Be Honest About “Sports Dreams”

As counselors, educators, and parents, we hear it all the time:

  • “I want to go pro.”

  • “I’m going to play in the NFL/NBA/MLB.”

  • “Sports are my plan.”

And here’s the thing, we should never be the ones to shut that down. But we should expand it. Because the truth is: the world of sports is HUGE, and playing is just one small piece of it.

The Sideline Is Still the Dream

Watching my daughter today, I realized something: she didn’t “give up” on a sports dream. She grew into one that fits her gifts. And that’s the message our students need.

There is magic in helping them see:

  • You can love sports and be a broadcaster

  • You can love sports and be a physical therapist

  • You can love sports and work in marketing, analytics, operations, or media

The dream doesn’t end, it evolves.

Careers in Sports That Aren’t Playing

Here are just a few paths we should be talking about more:

  • Sideline Reporter / Broadcaster

  • Sports Marketing & Social Media

  • Athletic Trainer / Physical Therapist

  • Sports Psychologist

  • Team Operations / Event Management

  • Data Analytics & Scouting

  • Journalism & Content Creation

  • Sports Turf Management

  • Facilities & Game Operations (yes, even the “behind-the-scenes magic” matters!)

Every one of these roles is part of the same story.

What This Means for Us as Counselors & Educators

Instead of saying “That’s unrealistic.”  We can say “Let’s map all the ways you can stay connected to what you love.” Instead of closing doors, we open more of them. It’s very Disney, if you think about it.  Because Disney doesn’t just show us one path.   It shows us possibilities.

The Proud Mom Part (Because I’m Not Skipping It)

Today, I didn’t just see my daughter on a sideline.

I saw:

  • Confidence

  • Preparation

  • Passion

  • A dream that found its lane

And I thought about every student sitting in our classrooms right now with a dream that might not look “traditional.”  They don’t need us to redirect them away from it. They need us to help them see all the ways it can come true.

The Takeaway

Whether it’s sports, art, music, or anything in between, the goal isn’t to limit the dream.  It’s to expand it.  Because sometimes the magic isn’t in playing the game, it’s in finding your place in the story.
