March Madness isn’t just for basketball; it’s time for a different kind of bracket.  Welcome to the Storybook SEL Final Four, where four incredible Disney movies go head-to-head, not for a trophy, but for their impact on social-emotional learning.  Each of these stories teaches powerful life skills our students need every day, such as understanding emotions, building confidence, setting goals, and embracing differences. But the real question is which one deserves the championship title?

Let’s meet the contenders

PRINCESS AND THE FROG

Tiana doesn’t just dream, she works.  This movie is the perfect example of teaching students the difference between:

  • Wishing for something

  • Working for something

Tiana shows us that success comes from planning, persistence, and staying focused on what matters.

SEL Takeaway: Dreams are important, but goals, effort, and action are what make them real.

MOANA

Moana teaches one of the most important SEL skills: knowing who you are and trusting it.  She struggles with expectations, self-doubt, and fear, but still chooses to move forward.

This story highlights:

  • Self-discovery

  • Courage

  • Trusting your inner voice

SEL Takeaway: Students learn that confidence isn’t about having no fear it’s about moving forward anyway.

INSIDE OUT

If SEL had a mascot, this might be it.  Inside Out gives students language for the emotions they experience every day.

It helps them understand:

  • All feelings are important

  • It’s okay to feel more than one thing at once

  • Emotions help us make sense of our world

SEL Takeaway: Students build emotional awareness and learn that feelings even the hard ones have a purpose.

ZOOTOPIA

Zootopia is all about seeing beyond labels.  Judy and Nick both face assumptions about who they are and what they’re capable of.

This movie opens the door to conversations about:

  • Bias and stereotypes

  • Inclusion

  • Belonging

SEL Takeaway: Students learn that everyone deserves respect and that we shouldn’t judge others based on assumptions.

It’s Game Time

We’ve got four incredible contenders:

  • The Princess and the Frog — Goal setting & hard work

  • Moana — Confidence & identity

  • Inside Out — Understanding emotions

  • Zootopia — Inclusion & empathy

But only ONE can win the Storybook SEL Championship

Which movie would YOU choose as the ultimate SEL champion and why?

  • Is it the one that teaches students to understand their emotions?

  • The one that helps them find their voice?

  • The one that pushes them to work toward their goals?

  • Or the one that builds empathy and inclusion?
